An Amicable End to the Seal Hunt in Canada

Last weekend during the annual seal hunt in Canada three sealers died and one is missing and presumed dead after their boat capsized. After the tragedy, an environmentalist by the name of Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society was quoted as saying: "The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society recognizes that the deaths of four sealers is a tragedy but Sea Shepherd also recognizes that the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of seal pups is an even greater tragedy."

Point taken Mr. Watson; the lives of four human beings are far less valuable than hundreds of thousands of seals. This is why I propose a solution to end the seal hunt for this year.

You choose four of the closest members of your family Mr. Watson, the ones you care about the most (we have to make this really worth it after all,) and someone; maybe the government, maybe the sealers (after all, they are already "baby killers", right Mr. Watson?); will kill the four chosen members of your family. In exchange for the slaughter of your family members, we won't allow the seal hunt for next year.

This seems to be a fair trade to me; after all, by your own admission, the lives of four people aren't worth the lives of those seals. I expect you'll jump at the idea!

There is one slight catch: considering around 200,000 to 320,000 seals are hunted every year and your quote said "hundreds of thousands," it's hard to maintain what exactly the seal to human life ratio is. Therefore, it is only fair that we kill four more members of your family every year to end the seal hunt for that year. You could also decide that maybe one year hundreds of thousands of seals aren't worth four of your family members. On those years, we'll gladly resume the seal hunt and hold off on killing your family members.

I should also remind you Mr. Watson that you also once said "We need to radically and intelligently reduce human population to fewer than one billion." Remember that conservation starts at home, and your glad sacrifice of four beloved members of your family would be doing your part to"radically and intelligently" reduce the human population on Earth.
